That bottom picture reminds me very much of Assisi. The architectural material appears to be a little different, however, and I never saw a crucifix that big hanging on an outside wall. On the other hand, they have lots of little frescoes and shrines on the sides of buildings and street corners.
Yeah, no kidding! That crucifix is awesome. The defining characteristic of Catholic culture is being able to put humongous religious art everywhere without it being thought odd.
Mustair was the only one of six villages in the valley to remain Catholic at the time of the Protestant Reformation, so the big crucifix may have been a special sign of religious allegiance, or maybe they would have put it up anyway . . . I don't know for sure.
